Assignment 2

Intersectional Sustainability Means: This concept refers to a holistic approach to sustainability that considers multiple interconnected factors, including environmental, social, cultural, and economic aspects. It’s about understanding how these factors interact and addressing them in a comprehensive manner to achieve sustainable outcomes. For example the architect calls for reducing the use of concrete for mass residential uses and instead use natural stone.

Addressing Climate Change and Resilient Architecture: the architect build her argument for the need to address Climate Change by addressing buildings that are not energy-efficient, do not use sustainable materials, can be adapted to changing environmental conditions. This could involve using locally sourced materials, incorporating renewable energy sources, and designing buildings to be resilient to local climate conditions.

Material/Tectonic Exploration: This involves understanding the properties and potentials of various building materials and how they can be used to create resilient and sustainable architecture.

Global, Local, and Individual scales: These scales can be addressed by considering the broad impacts of architectural decisions (global), the specific cultural and environmental context of the building (local), and the needs and experiences of individual users (individual).

The architect uses research (of the place, the history of the place, etc.) to inform her design process Incorporating local traditions and knowledge can contribute to sustainability by promoting the use of local materials, traditional building techniques, and designs that are adapted to the local climate and cultural context.

the architect observed the needs of her "clients/users" as a means of empowering them, how could your thesis incorporate the same method of observation as a means of research: For my thesis I observed how research is done on the water currently and researshed the need of the researchers.

The architect use research to inform her approach to Urban Design Research can inform urban design by providing insights into the social, environmental, and cultural context of the urban environment. This can guide decisions about the layout of public spaces, transportation networks, and other urban features.

The architect often challenges what the client has asked her to Challenging the Client’s Brief: Architects can propose alternative solutions based on their research and professional judgment. This can lead to designs that better meet the needs of users and respond to the local context.

Inspiration from the Architect’s Approach: The architect’s approach to research and design can be inspiring in its holistic consideration of sustainability, its respect for local culture and traditions, and its commitment to social responsibility and community engagement.

I personally find the difference in education styles interesting in the architect’s approach to research and design of the new library the masons did not understand the common western drawing and needed physical examples.

Modernism’s obsession with Form, Industrialized Materials, and Energy consumption: Modernist architecture often favored form and aesthetics, using industrial materials like steel, glass, and concrete, and relied heavily on technologies like air-conditioning. However, this approach has been criticized for its environmental impact and lack of cultural sensitivity.

Modernism and Cultural Identity: There’s ongoing debate about whether modernism, with its universal principles and industrial aesthetics, can coexist with local cultural identities.

Sustainability through understanding local traditions: Incorporating local traditions and knowledge can contribute to sustainability by promoting the use of local materials, traditional building techniques, and designs that are adapted to the local climate and cultural context.
